Before I cut the leather, I feel the entire hide: where it dimples, where it creases, where it's softer, where it's stiffter...In the same way that we speak and trees speak, leather speaks: its crumples, its cracks, its rimples, its rumples ... tell you what it wants to be, or shows you what it can be.
As a leather-smith, this philosophy has gotten me into trouble. You can't use just any leather to make any design. Every design demands a particualr weight for it to live and survive fashion trends and time.
Having worked with leather for 11 years, first as a designer, and now as a leather-smith, my hands understand leather. I use the most natural and the least processed leather to create something beautiful; something elegantly earthy that is funcitonal and gets better with the elements... rainy, cloudy, and sunny days.
Functionallity is one of the biggest elements in the making of my bags, and that's why my team and I make bags which can be worn in different ways. The more ways you can wear a bag, the more you will wear it, the more you will enjoy it, and the more you will love it.
Living in New York I am constantly surrounded by people and their bags. How people carry and wear their bags is music in itself. How their bags bang against their bodies, how their things jiggle and and janggle inside, is an ocean of inspiration.
Our bags are 100% percent handmade and hand cut here in New York City. Since we don't use templates or machines, they are made one by one by human hands. They are one of a kind!
